F.I.N.I.S.H
With the new school year preparing to start, I felt it would be good to provide helpful yet practical tips for my incoming freshman and continuing college students.
For a lot of you, this is a very exciting time! A new environment, new opportunities and the chance to discover new versions of yourself. College is full of many memorable moments that can last a lifetime. You meet new people and some become lifelong friends, some professors can become your mentor and your interactions with diverse groups of people can change the way you view the world.
College is the time to fully immerse yourself in endless possibilities.
Amidst the aforementioned things, the main goal is to obtain your degree-
to F.I.N.I.S.H
The acronym stands for: Focus, Interact, Network, Intern, Study and Have Fun.
If you keep this in mind, you will succeed not only in college but in life as well.
F- focus
You're in school for a reason- to get your degree and move on to the next level. Keep that goal at the front of your mind and you will come out on top no matter what! Be sure to keep distractions such as idle conversation, scrolling on social media and Netflix&chilling at a minimum. Between classes, it's easy to get caught up doing non- progressive things. Try finding new hobbies like exercising at the campus gym or finding a book to read for leisure.
I- interact
A memorable college experience all starts with you getting out to meet people. It's where life long friendships are created and bonds are made. I know that some of you are comfortable being introverted but, you'll need a friend at some point. Introduce yourself to classmates and join clubs/organizations. Be sure to check out all types of events- even the things you may feel are out of your comfort zone. There's usually something for everyone. You never know what you like unless you try it once. College is the time to do so!
N- network
Make important connections that can help you reach the next level. Get involved with student organizations and attend on-campus forums. Don't be afraid to speak to your professors (you'll need a letter of recommendation someday) and these relationships can also help secure a job after your undergrad days are over. Get over your fear of speaking to people. It may seem awkward at first but, the more you introduce yourself, the more people know your name and you're more likely to be remembered. You never know what your future holds or who people will become after college- get out there and talk to some folks.
I- intern
Work for free? I know it sounds less than pleasing but more businesses are paying students for their time and efforts. Interning gives you the opportunity to have an inside scope on the field you're desiring to pursue. It also offers the chance for you to meet people (network) and gain experience which is necessary for finding a job. They might even hire you full time if you're good! Sometimes, internships don't necessarily have to be in your field either. Check out your schools on-campus career center and they'll usually have a poole of internships to choose from. You can also ask your professors about internships they may know about.
S- Study
You thought it would be for sleep didn't you? Nah, you'll barely get any of that. Make sure you make adequate time in your schedule to study for your classes. I've crammed for exams and quizzes MANY times before. Let me tell you, nothing beats walking into a class and feeling confident in what you KNOW!
Being prepared will take you far in college and in life. Be sure to not jam pack your schedule with classes- leave room to eat, study, relax, turn up and repeat (the day- not the class).
H- have fun
This is what undergrad is made for! Have as many fun (safe) experiences as possible. Do something different. Make friends and have a good time! You'll look back and time will have passed so quickly and in the blink of an eye, everything will be a memory. I feel like I was just a college freshman yesterday but it was 7 years ago!!!
Remember the good things that have been instilled in you. Make a promise to yourself to focus and get things done. No one else is walking into those classrooms and doing the work for you so, don't worry about what 'they' say. You're there to handle your business! Be wise in your decisions and never be too prideful to seek help. College will teach you how to become resourceful but it will require that you put in the effort. Be safe- most campuses have on-campus clinics where you can get free condoms and get checked for STD's. Take care of yourself and enjoy your undergraduate career! I hope this post touches someone and resonates.
Move in KONFIDENCE!
